Does path name matter in search engine optimization?
Is it better to have a URL like widget.com/freewidget or widget.com/w. Meaning should i make my path descriptive in order for better search engine result?

Many people will say that you should make the path meaningful – not only from the search engine point of view but also from the human visitors aspect, having a meaningful path can encourage a higher number of click throughs on the search engine results.
Having said that you can get good search results without a meaningful path, the path is just one out of about 200 factors that Google uses to rank webpages for example.
The base to get top in Search Engine Result Page is the Keywords. Keywords can be placed not only in the content but in many other tags. Filename is one of them. You may have observed this; when you search in Google, sometimes based on the keywords in the URL, the page comes on top. So URLs place a good role in placing the keywords.
Other suggestions are:
- Use Hyphens in the URL as it is a delimiter.
- Use only lowercase
- Do not use lengthy URLs
Yes i would completely agree with John in this point, that using meaningful and keyword specific URL, will not only help Search Engines but user also to easily distinguish the pages and easy accessibility to the website
Keywords in URLs are important because most of the sites that are in the top positions in search engines mostly have meaningful URLs and URL paths. Making your paths contain keywords will not only affect your SERP rankings, but it will also make your URL easier to understand and to remember for your visitors. If you would watch Matt Cutt’s video, he stated that “keywords in URL helps a little bit”.
