How do I get my home business website listed on search engines for no money?
A friend who has an earthlink account asked me to throw up a simple
site to showcase his home business, get it listed, and spend no money.
I succeeded, but am having trouble with the submission to search
engines. I picked up a listing in MSN, YAHOO and GOOGLE. I submitted
only the home page, not every single page. I used meta statements, but
am not sure anymore how much they are used. The text on the home page
amply describes the business and could be used in lieu of
metastatements. The ranking seems to have fallen over the last couple
of months.
I haven’t done this kind of thing for a few years, so I’m not sure
about metastatements, or if there is some cheap or free software that
will assist in the submission process.
If I was allowed to spend money, I could probably have it listed and
rank fairly well, but within the "no money" guidelines, what more can I
do to ensure his site does, if not well, at least better.

You don’t need to submit every page, but you should make sure the homepage has links to every page on it. You can also try a sitemap, not only as a webpage, but also the kind you would use for a search engine https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login Google uses XML. Yahoo also uses sitemaps but they use a simple txt page with a list of your webpages. Heres a link to my sitemaps, just to give you an idea-

You can also improve your rankings by your link popularity. Google (along with many others) uses incoming links to your site in the calculation of your web site’s PageRank. PageRank is part of what determines the "importance" of your web pages (according to Google). The more sites (with SIMILAR SUBJECT MATTER), that link to yours, the better your Google ranking becomes.
Search for directories to submit your link to. A couple that I have used (all free) that have been useful in my ranking is: http://www.limerex.com , http://www.tatet.com/ , http://www.slackalice.com/ , http://www.lookdirectory.com/
Also look for websites with similar subject matter that are willing to trade links with you. Searchbliss has a neat tool called a backlinks finder that helps you find websites that you can submit your link to: http://www.searchbliss.com/seo-tools/back-links-finder.asp

Get a few people to link to your site from decent websites. If possible try to get them to put the words you want to rank for in the link text pointing at your site.
It gets much more complex than that for ultra competitive marketplaces, but that is generally enough if they are in a niche local market.

Making sure your site has good relevant content is your first and best bet. Ofcource follow the obviouse too such as Titles, description meta tags, and incomming links from relevant sites.
