I highly recommend reading and following all the tips on this site (it is a lot of text, but it's worth it).

http://selfpromotion.com/

I used this place years ago to promote new feature I added to my websites, and I'm still getting a good number of hits today (it's not a commercial site, but that doesn't really matter). If you get your site ready with the proper tags and such, and then go through and do the submits they suggest, it does take time, but in 3 months or so your link will start showing up all over the internet. Selfpromotion.com has been around a long time and the guy who runs it is very honest, nothing scammy. And it's free.

Good luck!

There is a free eBook on the following site that will help you with ethical ways to promote your site. I have used this myself and have achieved a #1 rank in google for my particular niche. It can take some time, but keep with the plan and you will be rewarded.

So, you don't want to spend a lot of time doing this, but do want to advertise? If you can afford it, the best way to do this is to partner with some of the top sites in that industry and earn some name recognition. Just think about the sites that you visit in that industry.

Without knowing your product/service or target market, remember that great content is important. Try to have updates on your site to get people to keep returning. For organic SEO, you may want to try some other tactics. Do keyword research to find the best keywords for your site and then make sure your keywords are found throughout your site with relevancy. Try to optimize relevant title and meta tags. Include a site map page. Start a blog... this is a great way to link to your site. Use this site to answer questions that are relevant to your site without pushing your url. Utilize local searches to get your company listed. You could also do enewsletters, ezine articles or offer freebies. Hope this helps!
