Is spamming a good strategy for business/website promotion or not?
I have thought about finding a way to spam to promote my website. It seems like this would b pretty easy. However, if I sent emails directly to people in their email boxes my thought is that they messages would be deleted or end up in the spam folder. I have, however, heard of spamming social networking sites (although I am not sure how one would do that.) Anyway, I just pose this question to you all. If you have any alternative ways to promote a website that are more viable please suggest such, even by personal email if you don’t want your "secret" to get out. Thank you.

Never spam people.
Everyone I know who receives spam ( and that’s everyone ) makes it a point to delete the messages without reading. And they will make it a point to boycott the product being spammed, what ever it is.
If you do enough research, you’ll find that products that are spammed , the results do NOT see sales increases. I do not know if they experience sales declines, but I would not be surprised.
Better to offer some incentive like something free for 2 packages purchased, or a coupon for 20% off the first purchase. In my experience as a small business consultant with SCORE, I have seen these work firsthand.
Do not spam — you will NOT be successful.
Yes both businesses and society frown upon spamming. As the other person said spam goes directly to a spam folder and is never even seen by the receiver. I have seen some spam posts with links in it to some questions here in yahoo answers. You can tell its spam because its a post with a link and says absolutely nothing pertaining to the question.
Article writing is the best way to get your website known to the public. Write articles 300-500 words long and submit them to as many article submission sites as possible. The biggest most well know article submission site is ezinearticles.com and it is free to join.

everyone hates spam including me. i always tag those kinds of emails as spam and automatically delete them. if that message comes from a friend, i may take the time to read it but if it comes from anonymous sender, it’s not worth my time.
the best ways to promote a website would be the following:
1. submit your site to search engines. use their webmaster tools for easier indexing/crawling of your webpages. add your XML sitemap as well.
2. create backlinks through blog/forum sites
3. post your URL on social networking sites
4. use q&a sites like yahoo answers by using your website as a source for your answers to questions posted
Spamming can be sometimes annoying and also most of the time the email lands in the Spam folder. To promote your business you can try other methods.
