Is there a lot of demand for video game writers? Is it a competitive market?
It seems story lines for video games are often the weakest link in most video games, which has me wondering, is there not a demand for good story lines, or is there a shortage of qualified writers? Are there much opportunities for someone interested in writing story lines for video games? If you can reference specific fields (rpg, rts, fps, etc) or companies (EA, Rockstar Games, Activision, etc) that would be helpful too. Thanks in advance.

You would have been much better off exploring this field of work 10 years ago. The influx of storyless console games have saturated the market with shallow multiplayer focused abominations. Bioware and Valve seem to be the only companies that value a plot anymore.
I don’t think its a lack of competent writers, more so a lack of competent gamers to appreciate a well developed plot.
