SEO question what constitutes organic link building?
Is organic or natural link building contacting websites personally and sending individual and personalized emails? How does google recognize the difference between organic and generated? Does one take a slower amount of time. Do I get rewarded if I build my links slowly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Contacting webmasters personally is one way of link building and it mostly brings you reciprocal links. There are much better methods of generating one way links from high-traffic website to your own website.
You can submit your website to Internet directories. You can write interesting articles and distribute them all over Internet (they all should have a link to your own website). And most importantly is to create "link bait". That can be a little bit complicated, but if you create something interesting on your website, people will wish to link to it and show it to their own visitors.
Also, according to many sources online and offline it is better to build your links slowly.

Organic links are links you didn’t pay for, and generally created because someone else thought that your website was interesting.
Link exchanges can be questionable, especially if the site you’re exchanging with is simply a list of sites, and doesn’t offer any real content. These link exchange farms are slowly being ignored (or worse, penalized) by search engines.
Consider commenting on blogs. This will also help build links organically. Again, the key is to offer something of value to the reader to make them want to link to you.

There are arguments for both "black hat" seo and "white hat" seo. Which path you decide to follow is up to you. I don’t think search engines can tell the difference unless you are ratted out.

Well it depends upon your site age. How much has been your site on the web. If its one month old than its too dangerous to get many links cause it may go to sandbox. And if its quit old than no prblm.
