I worked for 16 years, promoted 5 times, received excellent reviews. My last promotion was a transfer to the training dept. I was nominated because of my excellence in my current position. I was told by then current management that this was a temporary assignment designed to prepare me for a larger role in the company and that I could return to sales at any time. Since that time, the current CEO left and the new CEO was unaware of the agreement. I continued to work in training as received another promotion as Director of Training. All of the "committee" that nominated me to this position had since left the company. In 2009 my current boss the VP of Global Training was fired and escorted off the property. No explanation was given however while at a department dinner, he had made derogatory racial comments to me in front of others that became a heated discussion. I did not report this to HR as I was in fear of my job. I believe another employee did file this report with HR as well as other abusive allegations which led to his dismissal. (I should mention that I had a long history of friendship with my boss and worked for him early in my career with this company in another position which I was promoted…he was from the south and did not consider his remarks to beinflammatoryy). Our department was in limbo and I went through a long period of stress including lack of sleep, lack of appetite (losing close to 40 lbs) lack ofconcentrationn etc. My doctor prescribed an antidepressantt as well as anti anxiety medications.
Later In 2009 I approached the new Divisional VP and explained the arrangement and that it was my desire to return to sales. As he was being promoted he advised me to communicate this to thin-compingng regional VP. Since I was aware of an upcoming reorganization, I met with the neRegionalal VP and explained the agreement in which he told me not to worry, that I would survive. A few weeks later I participated in a conference call with someone on the re-organization committee in which he stated that my current position was being eliminated, and he was aware of the conversation I had with the Regional VP. He said I should monitor the company website as they will be posting a position in which I should apply. "that ;he highly recommends that I apply online" Although I was told that my position was eliminated, there were two postings to which I applied. One was for the job that I previously held in the training dept (which they said was eliminated) and the other was for a locally based position in National Accounts which i was qualified for. I also had a conversation with the Division Manager (who reports directly to the Regional VP in which he had a plan. The current State Manager Position of which I held for 10 years might become available again. This hinged on the current State Manager taking the National Account position. This did not happen and the VP of National Accounts decided to hire someone from outside the company. So I was left in the cold although I still had reason to believe that they were going to try and find a position for me since I was told not to worry. I believed them. In the interim, I took a position with another company which after 7 months decided to shut down my position due to budget constraints. Another layoff. A month later, the current divisional VP left the company and the state manager from the previous company was fired creating an open position that I previously held for 10 years. I applied as I was told online, and had a conversation with an executive that was part of the reorg committee in which he also strongly adivised I apply online. I met with the new Divisional VP and explained not only my experience, but also the conversations I had regarding the previous layoff and that I was told not to worry. Instead of bringing me back in, they decided to move the current National Accounts Manager into the State Manager position. Again I was denied. Then last week the person in the State Manager decided to leave the company and again i applied online, sent emails and left phone messages as to my interest to re-join the company. I am waiting to hear but fear that nothing will come of it.
In the meantime, I recieved a phone call from my past Regional VP who left the company and has helped me network with a company he was very close to. The job was a perfect fit but he mentioned that he had a conversation with the hiring VP as to why I didnt get the job. He was told they loved me but when the called the previous company they gave me an unfavorable review. I have never had a negative review, my work was acknowleded through 5 promotions and was never reprimanded in any way.
Do I grounds to sue on any of the issues. Extreme mental anguish, false promises that kept me from conducting a serious job search while I waited for them to come around? anything?

I work in sales, and I’m expected to know how to run their software as our contact manager. What I thought was a sales job turned out to be a computer job with tons of follow-up required to be entered into the computer. My boss seems very frustrated with me because I’m having trouble learning the software, and downloads, ect. My training was for one day, and I just watched over her should during the entire training for the software. I love working with the clients and closing the sale, I just can’t stand my boss or her condescending attitude. I have only been with the company 8 days, 100% commission, and haven’t earned one dollar. Yet I have worked everyday on my computer learning the software, and doing client follow-up, and meetings, and so far put 56-60 hours in. I think I’m burnt out before I have really even started, and my boss just keeps pushing, and pushing to do more, and never take a day off or spend any personal time with my kids. QUESTION: SHOULD I BAIL OR TRY TO TOUGH IT OUT….I FEEL CRAPPY EVERY TIME I TALK TO MY BOSS?????

i got a job at a retail place. i worked in different depts and was told i could choose where i want to work. i end up being assigned to a dept i never knew about, never worked in, and it was not my choice. i feel the skill level of the other employees is much higher than mine, which is why i would not have chosen this dept and that it is ill fitting for me to be there. i feel that the places i asked to work in were better fits. in my official dept the customers dont respond to me i have to share a work space with a group of people who work for a different company that leases space from my company, and they have some type of issue with my company, they are very protective of the workspace they dont like any other employees using things there, even though it is the property of the company i work for. the desk, the computer, the phone line, the computer software, all my company’s. i was warned about this group but not told exactly what the problem was or what was going on. and my immediate boss has told another employee i would do something for them. my boss over my immediate boss told me and my immediate boss that i was not to do this thing.. i went from liking this company to totally hating my situation here, but am stuck due to financial reasons. i am not a political person, and everyday i feel like am being played, i dont know who to trust i dont really know whats going on. what do you think is going on here? i know its not much info.have you gone through this how did you handle it? i am grateful to have a job, please dont i should be grateful to have a job in this econmy, i know about the bad economy, thats i why i put up with this sh!t situation, i was told i would get support, and training, and i have yet to see that. i dont want to put in all this work for someone who is just bullshtting. it feels like a set up.

I have been working in my office for 4 years and until recently was very happy. I am a computer programmer. 4 months ago there was a reorg. I was chosen to work on a new project with new technology and pulled from what I had been working on. I did not know how to do the new work. They have put off sending me to training and the last 4 months I have basically done nothing but read technical manuals. I am just beginning to get the training I need. My boss has asked me to learn to use a piece of software. I started learning and made considerable progress but have run into a snag that I can’t figure out how to solve. I searched on google, looked for help online in forums, etc. and still can’t solve it. I told my boss and he said I needed to figure it out. He also told me had already solved my problem, but he wouldn’t tell me the answer because he wanted me to figure it out. He told me to research a few other things. I have no background in these things.
I don’t even understand what he has asked me to look at. When I ask him a question he just responds with something else that I don’t understand? I find him intimidating and I am afraid to bother him more but am completely stuck and have no idea what to do. I don’t feel that this situation is my fault, but only the fault of lack of training. What should I do?
He won’t let me contact the software company because we are using a trial version and we have more than one copy downloaded and he doesn’t want them to know that.

My boss has suddenly appointed me to do all the SEO placement and submissions as well as site updates and configuations to get listed… It was my understanding that we were going to pay someone else to do this, someone with experience. I have some experience but I feel at this point it will take me alot more time and cost her alot more money to pay me to do it. My question is this: How much should I charge her? I am already her personal assistant and make a decent wage. I am thinking about finding a safe middle ground for payment and/or charging her extra funds for any time I spend working on the site, which will be ALL of my time at this point, since her site has just been created and barely online. What is your opinion?

I am in Pennsylvania. I have been at my job for almost 5 months. I was hired as an Administrative Assistant and the job was very laid out and I was keeping up fine. Then my boss started throwing more things at me that I’m not qualified to do. Such as accounts payable. Sometimes I make mistakes and then he threatens my job. I am not an accountant and wasn’t hired as such. Then, he pulled me into his office on 2 occasions and told me that in 2 weeks he would reevaluate me and let me know if I was going to keep my job, but every reason he said was so confusing that thinking about it now, I don’t even know why he did it. Then, recently, he came to me and asked if I knew how to make a website. I told him I had ONE coding class and knew some basics. He fires his web designer and then tells me to design this website. I gave it my all and when I couldn’t get any further as I am not a web designer, wasn’t hired as one and never trained to be one, I told him that I did the best I could do. I told him that I am ill equipped to design a web site. He then told me that I needed to get it done within an hour or two or he’ll take me off the job because I’m not applying myself. I’ve given this job 100% of my effort, but one day he says it’s not good enough and the next I’m so smart he doesn’t know what he’d do without me. he is trying to force me to do this site and yet again, subtly threatened my position with this very small Nationwide branch of 6 people. I am walking on eggshells, I’m being forced to perform duties that I am not equipped to perform, and I"m being subtly threatened when I tell him that I can not do it. Also, I am being asked to Lie in regard to another "business" he runs out of his nationwide office. Nationwide will not allow him to agent their business if he’s running something else, so I’m am to say that this large map with thumbnails in it is his vacation destinations while it is actually all the places he insures. Is this valid reason to quit my job and get unemployment?

My boss is a busy lawyer and he wrote a legal book and wants to sell it. I’m only an intern but I have to find projections(?) and find out how to write a business plan for this venture that is already underway. any free advice will be helpful.

The Sunday team leader is a lady who is older than me. She came in last year and became our team leader soon after that. Nobody likes her because is so bossy and picky all the time. And she usually reported to the boss what we did when the boss is not around. I was reading some development stuff from the intranet online, and from the webpage I was directed to the Microsoft Training page on softwares. When she saw I was browsing the website that does not belong to the office, she said "don’t you think I won’t tell the boss about it?" Then I asked her what she said, she just said she was joking. Then I read the online bus route timeable that does not belong to the office website to make sure I could catch the bus home after work, she entered my room and glanced at me for a few seconds, I can see that she is going to tell me boss about me browsing different websites online. What should I do?
do you think I will get fired?
I am so worried.
Thanks

My boss has asked me to type up thank you letters for his customers at the car dealership where I work, and I don’t even know where to begin. I tried doing some research online, but everything wants to charge. Please let me know of any websites that offer free samples of these type of letters or perhaps if you know a good letter I could use, please email me a copy of the letter at lamccoy06@yahoo.com Thanks!

I work in an office where i’m a supervisor. We have a hired consultant who I’ve been working with for about 4 months. I sensed some sort of attraction right from the start, We have remained professional. As I’m sure both of us are a bit afraid of "sexual harrassment" but… I think he’s sexy. Recently, it was announced that his contract with us had expired and he would no longer be with us in Feb. I suggested in a meeting we have a Farewell Happy Hour (I’m known as the "event planner"). Then after the meeting (maybe even a day later) I sent him an email that said "Hey, If you want to stay in touch my home email address is _______________). He responds back "I would like that also. My home email address is ____________. You can also use my work email address. "

Then, I sent him an email to his home email address saying "Here are a couple of recommended bars (since he’s not from the area) that we could go for a happy hour. [ I listed the bars, one happened to be a sushi bar.]"

I didn’t hear back from him, so I sent a txt message to his cell that said "Do you like sushi?" to which he responded "yes I like sushi. But Tammy doesn’t" Tammy is the boss that contracted with him. I forgot that she was in town for some business meetings and staying at the same hotel as him." So I responded "Ohhhhhhh, That’s too bad. I know a great sushi place. Oh well. See you tomorrow." and he responded "Yea, too bad. See u tomorrow."

I saw him today, and he had to train me on some things for work since he’s leaving. It was computer training and software training so one-on-one at the computer. We were rather close to each other and it was quite comfortable. Several times our glances caught each other and we’d look each other in the eyes as we talked. But…. Tammy was also in the office (she’s usually not when we talk) so he seem’d a bit more reserved. Usually we joke and talk… but it was down to business.

I’m not sure if we’re flirting… or if we’re remaining professional. Help? Since his contract is ending and he’s from out of town… i’d be open to a little fling…. but don’t want to overstep any boundries.

I have been working on a website using Contribute for a Michigan nonprofit since November 2005. It is on an as needed basis. This was my first job after I attained my BSBA and I took it on as a second job for a low hourly rate of . less than I make regularly. I work on average 10-20 hours a month, not much but it helps pay the bills and I can do the work from home at my convenience. I have never received a raise or bonus even when I added a tremendous amount of value to the site during a 5 month period of many more hours put in on the site. If you know anything about Contribute, it is not difficult and virtually anyone with computer knowledge can be taught. However, my boss has now asked me to show his assistant how to use Contribute so they don’t have to "bother" me with little updates and they would still call on me for bigger projects although I see me training her as phasing me out. What would you do and what would you charge if you did train a replacement in this situation?
I am not considered a consultant and have no contract. I am on the books as a general employee, just no benefits, etc. And I am not "changing my fees because I don’t like the outcome", I just wanted advice from others in the same situation on what they would do. I realize that they can fire me at any time but they are less inclined to do so since no one at the company knows even the password or ftp info. And I am concerned with this conflicting with my day job since she will not want to train after hours. I don’t want to burn vacation time since I only have two weeks annually. Thanks for the advice.

I am not a consultant and do not have a contract to refer to. It is likely that the woman I train will want to do this during her work day which would conflict with my day job which is my "career" position and I earn more there as well.
agree, I do not want to exploit the situation. I am thinking of letting them know that I will do the training, but it will have to be at my convenience after my regular job. I am still not sure that I will charge more than my regular rate…thinking on that still….please more suggestions??

I am doing a research paper on the ethics of socialism vs. capitalism in the work place using Charles Dickens’ Hard Times as a reference. I want to compare the fact that people that work long hours at grueling jobs deserve more pay than the bossman ahead of them – or more a more modern and specific example could be a paramedic/fireman to an actor/singer. I am needing solid sources, mostly from books within the library, but I can’t seem to find a good keyword for it. I am sure its out there, so if you could help me with the word or some solid internet sources/books I would be more than grateful
ADDED: My paper isn’t on the boss vs. the common worker, that was the example in the book Hard Times. I am relating it to the the paramedic/laborer/factory worker to that of people who contribute nothing more to society than entertainment. Also, I am not really looking for an explanation, I just need keywords or sources to get information from. Thanks.

Is it proper to use a letter written by your prior boss commending your work on a website for your new business? Do you have to have his permission to post his name… ect. that was written to you in the letter? Thanks
