I reviewed the Sony DSR-PD170 for a magazine and it was excellent. In particular, it’s low-light performance is outstanding. The DSR-PD170 is a standard definition camcorder.
The action today is in low-end HD camcorders, such as those from Sony, JVC and Canon. The Canon HV10 sells for around $1,100 and is a true HD camcorder. However, the Canion XL H1 makes a far better HD picture for a price several times higher than the HV10. I’m personally holding out for the XL H1.
