What does this sentence from an article mean?
‘He cut bait on stocks in an effort to generate cash before the market crash he thought was coming.’
I don’t really understand what this is saying. Please help?

"Fish or cut bait" is an old saying. I assume that it means get to work or fiddle around with niceties. What it means in this context, I’ve no idea.
