the best bird cages are generally, a very tall saquare shape. (think a rectangle like a sky scraper.) so I would use

1/4 inch square fencing, and non-chemically treated wood. pine or somthing easy to work with.

I would say 2-1/2 to 3ft tall and 2 feet wide should be preaty nice.

or just google or yahoo search it. (check the yahoo groups for birds.)
